Why is this project important?

  • The carer’s mental health is adversely affected by caregiving.
  • Caregivers report higher levels of stress than others.
  • Studies show higher rates of depression symptoms and mental health conditions among caregivers.
  • Caregivers with chronic stress may experience deterioration in short-term memory, attention, and verbal IQ.
  • Along with increasing stress, caregivers are more likely to use alcohol and other harmful substances.
  • Family caregivers are more prone to high levels of hostility than others.
  • High rates of depressive symptoms and mental health problems among caregivers put many caregivers at risk of deteriorating physical health.
