Psychological First Aid Training for First Responders

The Mental Health Awareness Initiative provides free online training for individuals and specialists who offer crisis response first aid.

The training will be conducted in Armenian and English.

The duration of the first training module is 5 hours. There will be 4 breaks during the training.

What is Psychological First Aid?

Psychological First Aid (PFA) is an evidence-based approach to supporting individuals affected by a crisis or traumatic event. PFA reduces initial distress, provides practical support, and promotes short— and long-term coping and recovery.

Who can participate in the training?

Those individuals and specialists who already provide or will soon offer support to individuals affected by the crisis.

Why is this training essential for first responders?

The training is crucial for first responders because it equips them with the skills to provide immediate emotional and practical support to individuals affected by crises. Here’s why it matters:

  1. Addresses Immediate Emotional Needs

Traumatic events can leave people in shock, fear, or confusion. This training helps first responders recognize signs of acute distress and offer support to stabilize individuals emotionally.

  1. Prevents Long-Term Psychological Impact

Early intervention can reduce the risk of long-term mental health issues, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, or depression, by promoting resilience and coping strategies.

  1. Enhances Communication Skills

First responders often encounter people in highly vulnerable states. PFA training teaches active listening, empathy, and effective communication.

  1. Improves Outcomes in Crisis Situations

A calm and supportive presence can de-escalate panic, confusion, or aggression, making it easier to manage such situations and provide physical care.

  1. Protects First Responders’ Mental Health

Training includes strategies for self-care and stress management, helping first responders maintain their own emotional well-being and avoid burnout or secondary trauma.

  1. Builds Trust and Connection

PFA fosters trust between first responders and affected individuals.

PFA training enhances first responders’ ability to support others while safeguarding their mental health, making it a vital component of emergency preparedness and response.
